Affidavit of citizenship
Home Affairs
For a Toronto retention request, prepare a notarized sworn affidavit stating that no other citizenship has been taken. The Toronto instruction says copies of documents and the affidavit should be certified by a Notary Public or Commissioner of Oaths only. A separate sample shows an identity field and signature lines.

How to use it
- Match the route This page covers the Toronto consular instruction for a South African citizenship retention application. Check that this is the process for your request before using the steps below. The sample affidavit is a separate reference, so do not assume its wording is accepted for the Toronto process.
- Prepare the Toronto statement Use the Toronto requirement as your wording check: notarized sworn affidavit stating that no other citizenship has been taken. Read the full statement before you swear it. Check that it describes your own circumstances. If it does not, ask the office handling your request how to proceed instead of guessing or changing the wording yourself.
- Compare the sample carefully The sample includes a citizenship statement and a separate statement of purpose. Compare those parts with the Toronto requirement and with the process you are following. A similar topic does not establish that the sample can replace the Toronto wording. Ask the office handling your request if you are unsure which wording to use.
- Check the identity field The sample describes the declarant identity field as holder of South African ID number. Use the field as a guide when reviewing the sample. This page does not ask you to enter an identity number.
- Review the signature and stamp fields The sample labels the applicant’s signature line signature of the applicant. It also has a line for signature of the Notary and a Notary Public (official stamp). Check that you can identify each part when reviewing the sample.
- Arrange certification Copies of the documents and sworn affidavit should be certified by a Notary Public or Commissioner of Oaths only. Check that the person certifying your documents has one of these roles before you arrange certification.
