What Is SASSA and its Purpose?

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) manages government grants to support vulnerable citizens. It provides monthly financial aid through programmes like the Old Age Grant, Child Support Grant, and Social Relief of Distress (SRD) R350/R370 grant. SASSA serves over 19 million beneficiaries, focusing on poverty relief and dignity for seniors, disabled individuals, unemployed adults, and caregivers.

Types of SASSA Grants Available

SASSA offers 8 main grants:

  • Old Age Grant: For citizens aged 60+ with limited income
  • Disability Grant: Supports adults aged 18-59 unable to work due to disabilities
  • Child Support Grant: R560/month per child under 18 for qualifying caregivers
  • SRD Grant: R370/month temporary relief for unemployed adults (18-59)
  • Foster Care Grant: R1,200/month for court-appointed foster parents
  • Care Dependency Grant: For parents of children with severe disabilities
  • War Veterans Grant: Supports elderly military veterans
  • Grant-in-Aid: Additional support for existing grant recipients needing full-time care

2025 Grant Amounts

  • Old Age Grant (60-74 years): R2,310/month
  • Old Age Grant (75+ years): R2,330/month
  • Disability Grant: R2,310/month

  • SRD Grant: R370/month (unchanged from 2024)

Application Requirements

All applicants need:

  • Valid SA ID/book/document
  • Proof of income (bank statements/payslips)
  • Residential proof (utility bill/affidavit)

Special requirements apply per grant. Disability applicants require medical reports, while caregivers need children's birth certificates.

How to Apply

In-person applications: Visit any SASSA office with required documents. Processing takes up to 3 months.
Online SRD applications: Use srd.sassa.gov.za or WhatsApp 082 046 8553.

Important Updates

  • Postbank Black Cards replacing SASSA Gold Cards by March 2025
  • SRD Grant extended to March 2026
