Use ALV if you did not receive a motor vehicle licence renewal notice. If you received the notice, take it with you. Bring identification and proof of your residential address. Renew at your registering authority or a selected post office, or use the NaTIS online service.

How to use it
- Check which document to use If you received the motor vehicle licence renewal notice, take it with you. If you did not receive one, complete form ALV.
- Confirm the ALV edition ALV copies show different editions: ALV(9)(2011/07) and ALV(8)(2005/06). Ask your registering authority which edition it accepts before filling in the form.
- Enter the owner’s name Follow this limit for the owner particulars: initials and first names (not more than 3). Check the spelling before signing.
- Check the vehicle identification Complete the field marked chassis number/VIN. Compare the characters with your vehicle records before submitting the renewal.
Document checklist
- Identification Bring your identity document. Acceptable identification is essential if a proxy or representative handles the application.
- Proof of address Bring proof of your residential address, such as a utility account.
- Utility account in someone else’s name Ask the account holder to make an affidavit declaring that you live at the address. Attach the utility bill to the affidavit.
- Informal settlement address Bring a letter from your ward councillor with an official date stamp confirming your residential address.
- Vehicle registered to an organisation or company Bring the organisation’s or company’s business certificate. The proxy should bring their identity document and letter of proxy.
- Someone else renewing for you For the Western Cape route, prepare a letter giving permission to renew the licence and a certified copy of your ID. The person renewing should bring their own ID.
- Public transport or heavy-load vehicle Get a roadworthiness certificate if the vehicle is used for public transport or is a heavy-load motor vehicle.
