Vehicle bill of sale affidavit
Vehicles
An affidavit is a written statement made under oath. For a vehicle sale, handle that sworn statement separately from the seller’s and buyer’s registration tasks. The seller notifies the registering authority; the buyer applies to register the vehicle. Prepare purchase proof as well when registering a pre-owned vehicle.

How to use it
- Be clear about your statement An affidavit is a written statement made under oath. The person making it swears that the contents are true. Write only a statement you are prepared to swear is true. Read it carefully before you swear to its contents.
- Get help with the process You can make an affidavit at any police station, where an officer will provide you with a standard form and help you complete the process.
Document checklist
- Purchase record For registration of a pre-owned vehicle, prepare proof of purchase of the vehicle. Keep the purchase record with the vehicle-sale papers for the registration process. Before you go, check that you have the record for the vehicle being registered. Keeping these papers together can make it easier to find them when you need to submit them.
- Proof of title-holder eligibility, if requested Check whether the registering authority requires proof that you have the right to be registered as the vehicle’s title holder. If it does, provide an invoice or a sales agreement. If you do not have either document, contact your nearest call centre or registering authority to establish whether it accepts or requires another document as proof.
- Buyer’s submission papers The buyer of the vehicle must submit the forms at the registering authority within 21 days of buying the vehicle, along with the registration form obtained from the seller and a roadworthiness certificate (it is the responsibility of the buyer to ensure that the vehicle is roadworthy).
